AVID Excel Coming 2020-2021
AVID Excel is “AVID English Learner College Readiness, which is referred to as AVID Excel, was developed to more fully address the needs of English language learners (ELLs) throughout the AVID System for college readiness. AVID Excel furthers the AVID mission of preparing all students—including ELL students—for college readiness and success. “AVID Excel develops students’ academic language proficiency in all domains—reading, writing, speaking, and listening—while also developing their self-determination, leadership skills, and motivation to become college-ready.”
AVID
(Advanced Via Individual Determination)
AVID is an elective class designed to prepare students for college. The program challenges students to be responsible, organized, and to be a self-directed learner. The program places special emphasis on growing writing, critical thinking, teamwork, organization and reading skills. Students in AVID are taught study skills, time management, and how to work with their peers. In addition to this, they also learn about colleges and careers. Being in the AVID program allows students to move into advance courses and excel with the help of tutors from the colleges FGCU and FSW. The curriculum focuses on building skills and developing behaviors that lead to success. Other aspects of AVID include public speaking, community service, monthly professional days, tutorials, and college field trips.
